After a sharp decline in COVID-19 case numbers, Indonesia could allow foreign tourists to return to Bali and other areas by October, Luhut Pandjaitan, a senior minister, said Friday.
After a second devastating virus wave caused by the Delta variant, the Southeast Asian nation is moving cautiously to reopen their borders.
Luhut, Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs said that the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has dropped by 94.5% from a peak in mid July.
“We are pleased today that the reproduction rate has fallen below 1… Luhut stated at a news conference that it was the lowest reproduction rate during the pandemic. It indicates that the pandemic has been under control.
He also noted that the national hospital bed occupancy rate fell below 15% and the positivity rate (or the percentage of people who have been tested positive) was lower than 5%.
Luhut stated that if current trends continue, “we are very optimistic” that Bali will reopen by October.
He said that South Korea, Japan and Singapore are some of the countries that the government might accept foreign nationals first because of the low spread virus in those countries.
Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Indonesia’s health minister, told Reuters earlier in the week that reopening for foreigners was also dependent upon 70% receiving their first COVID-19 shot.
According to data from the health ministry, more than 21% have been fully vaccinated and almost 40% have had their first shot.
Malaysia has reopened Langkawi Island to domestic tourists, while Thailand Phuket opened Samui and Samui islands to foreign tourists. Vietnam’s idyllic Phu Quoc is also planning to open its doors to tourists.
The worst coronavirus epidemic in Asia has hit Indonesia, with over 4.1 Million cases and 140,000 deaths. However, experts in public health believe that the actual numbers are much higher.
